My local newspaper is part of a national chain (as most) and they are really pushing the online version of their site now. The old business model (more ads, more ads, more ads!) is proving to be ineffective online. On their homepage, there are 12 slots for Google Ads, and 40 internal ads – yet only 6 articles to read. On printed paper they would never attempt this type of clutter however online it seems to be perfectly acceptable. I would wager quite a sum that if the amount of ads was cut down, the focus shifted to the quality articles and the amount of internal ads was cut, the newspaper would see an increase in traffic and revenue. Just a thought.
